You see a small table (on which is a banana) here.
While that's certainly better than the original (i.e., treating surface like
a normal container), it still doesn't sound very good. I prefer the simple:
You see a small table. On the table is a banana, an orange, and a penguin.
Or if you want something less choppy:
You see a small table on which rests a banana, an orange, and a penguin.
